The Pokemon character Pikachu is derived from this animal. These relatives of rabbits live in burrows under rock slides and/or logs in mountainous regions. American Pikas are about eight inches long when full grown. They stay active all year and stash food (plants) to get themselves through the winter. They're timid but inquisitive animals and will sometimes come out to see what all the noise is when I'm clamboring around in a rock slide.

I laugh everytime I look at this photo. The Pika just looks so silly.

Ok, you caught me. It's just my favorite stuffed animal. Just kidding! LOL. These cute little buggers might be in your neck of the woods. Maybe there's a rock slide up on Okanogan Mountain or somewhere else around there. Sometimes you can locate them by the sound they make. The best I can describe it is it's sort of a nasal "meeep" sound.

In the wild, Weasels (which are related to Ferrets) eat these Pikas. It seems cruel but Weasels need to eat too. :)
